The 90’s was a decade in which the Yankees, Braves, Blue Jays, Twins, and Indians all were the heavy favorites in baseball. For our dear Red Sox, the 90’s was a time of ups and downs. In the mid to later 90’s we witnessed division winning, playoff contending teams. The early 90’s? Not so much, those teams have seemingly been forgotten, and rightly so. What I will give credit to the Red Sox teams of 1990-1994 was the utter dominance in moustache etiquette. I would like to pay tribute to not only the men early 90’s, but the mid to later Sox teams need some credit as well.

10. Darren Lewis, OF (1998-2001)
Mighty Mouse was famous for his groomed penciled stash style. Every time this guy was up at bat, he would do a weird gesture with his mouth as if he had a small case of turrets. Anyhow, he was a good speed option during the 1998 season, but it was the ’stache people will forever remember.

9. Rich Garces, RP (1996-2002)
Big Ol’ Fat Rich Garces, Sox Nation absolutely adores this guy. He currently pitches for the Nashua Pride in Nashua, NH. His tapered ’stache didn’t get as much credit as it deserved. For most of the time he was always doning the thinly-shaved thing of beauty. He will forever be missed in Red Sox memory. I had to add him in here because the picture is just too hilarious.

8. Mike Greenwell, LF (1985-1996)
You have to appreciate a guy who spends his entire career with one team and that’s just what Mike Greenwell did. He patrolled left field and I think he’s probably one of the most underrated left fielders in Sox history. Greenwell was a versatile player and could provide pop and a little speed. He was second place in MVP voting in 1988 (lost to Jose Canseco). But what I remember best of Mike Greenwell was the prowess of the moustache. Greenwell wore his with pride and was a heavy contributor to the Sox Mustache gang of the early 90’s.

7. Jody Reed, 2B (1990-1992)
Is it me, or does Jody Reed remind you of the president of Red Sox Nation and current NESN analyst, Jerry Remy? You absolutely have to love the divided chevron style mustache. The thing is just a work of art. Jody Reed is yet another player to add to the gang of ’stache adornees from the early 90’s Red Sox.

6. Tony Pena, C (1990-1993)
Pena was a player who got a lot of credit for his magical mystique of mustache splendor. He’s one of your typical catchers who was there for defensive purposes as his offensive game isn’t what I would call…strong. He is now with the New York Yankees as a third base coach. What I remember most from Pena is the way he actually caught. Sometime he would sit on his ass with one leg all the way out to his side.

5. Tom Brunansky, OF (1990-1992, 1994)
I look at Brunansky and porn mustache immediately comes to mind. He absolutely looks like an 80’s porn star to me. His nickname was Bruno and what Sox fans remember most about Bruno was his diving catch of an Ozzie Guillen line-drive, with mustache and all, to help secure a spot in the playoffs for the 1990 Red Sox. On a side not, he could also provide some pop in the lineup.

4. Jeff Reardon, RP (1990-1992)
I remember watching the home-grown Reardon as a kid when he broke Rollie Fingers’ save record, I was also saying to myself, “man is he hairy.” Look at the huge pile of facial hair monstrosity. It’s great to see a Boston boy pitch for his hometown team, and it was great watching this gorilla record save after save for the Red Sox in the early 90’s.

3. Frank Viola, SP (1992-1994)
When I stare at Viola’s unusual, yet breathtaking mustache, I think of a mix between Jody Reed and Tom Brunansky. You have the separation of Reed but the color and style of Brunansky. This makes for a unique mustache only a man like Frank Viola could wear. Viola did have a couple good seasons in ‘92 and ‘93, but it’s too bad those teams weren’t so hot.

2. Dwight Evans, OF (1990)
Ok, so he only played one season in the 90’s for Boston, but he helped bring about the ’stache era here at Fenway. Showing his support for the cehvron mustache style, Dewey became a fan favorite in Boston. Look at the sheer depth and thickness of his stache, it’s really something remarkable. As a player, nobody played right field like Dwight Evans.

1. Wade Boggs, 3B (1990-1992)
I loved Wade Boggs until the moment he signed with the New York Yankees. But there was no denying that Boggs sported the most invigorating mustache in Sox history. At least that’s what I think. The 12-time All Star and Hall of Famer could flat out hit the ball, and doing it with that mustache made it just THAT much better. To me, Boggs is in his own class with the hint of red in his ’stache. Anybody agree with me?
If any of you readers can think of anyone else that I missed, let me know.
